Spirit Filled Witness

Spirit Filled Witness

Sermon Notes

Please turn in your Bibles to Acts 1:1-11 / Page 909- Pew bibles

  • Please stand for the reading of God’s word.

Rhythms of the Church

  • Preparing us to be the church and enter in the rhythm of His will.
    • Luke 24, we saw all of human history points to “the Word”- Jesus.
    • From Genesis to Malachi—-> he is coming.
  • It’s all about Jesus.
  • How do we enter that rhythm? Be about the WORD, Jesus
  • Last week we are to Continue Kingdom Change.
  • Continue all that Jesus began to do
  • Even greater things! If you are in a Community Group

SLIDE- “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.”  John 14:12-14

Continue all that Jesus taught,

  • Why the Bible is our authority, in it are the words of life!
  • A huge aspect of his teaching as he is preparing us to be the church is…

The Kingdom of God, his rule and reign over all areas of life

  • We are in His Kingdom, the temple of God, live as such.
  • WHat areas of our lives need to come under the rule and reign of God?
  • As we allow God to search us, living a life of repentance, it brings…

Change, we change areas in our lives and we bring change to the lives and city around us.

Be about the word as we Continue Kingdom Change

as a… “Spirit Filled Witness”

Why one sentence? Because it all from the same scripture. If you are in a community group, we learned an inductive study of scripture becoming an exegete, as we pull or lead out from, the text.

What does this mean for you, for us? You, like the disciples, are being prepared to enter into the greatest song ever played and to join in the rhythm of what will soon be, the church.  To tap into ultimate meaning and purpose. To be able to say, “I have fulfilled the reason I was born.”    or like the Apostle Paul

SLIDE- I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. 2 Timothy 4:7-8

That last part, that’s us.

We have an instrument, a part to play, so let’s begin. (Like a maestro)  That’s the book of Acts. That’s what we are being prepared for. This is the Rhythm of the church.

#1. Spirit   vs. 2

  • Context “through he Holy Spirit”  THE HANDOFF
  • Who is the Holy Spirit?
    • When I say, “Spirit filled” who is this that “fills”?
    • The Holy Spirit is a person. He has a distinct mind, will & emotion, yet, he is God. There is only one God, but there is distinct persons, yet there is only one.

Each member of the Trinity has a role in our lives. The Spirit…

           #1. Helps us.

SLIDE- “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15-17

  • “Another Helper”
    • Someone not me but just like me.
    • To come alongside as a helper, comforter,

          #2. Teaches us.

SLIDE-  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. John 14:26

#3. Empowers us, Read Acts 1:8

#2. Filled  Read vs. 5
  • Baptized, to be immersed
  • How does this work?
    • Becoming a believer brings a “filling” of the Holy Spirit.  It’s…

          #1. By Faith

Slide-  In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, Ephesians 1:13

  • Acts is a story, a history. It is not ALWAYS what needs to happen.
  • Tongues, AofG, Baptism of the Holy Spirit of Second Blessing
  • How this works
    • The mind catching up to what the spirit has experienced.
    • We have been immersed in the Spirit. He exposed areas of darkness and adds to them life.
  • The problem is, we don’t believe it.

          #2. Continually asking

  • Ephesians 5:18, Do not get drunk with wine but “be filled with the Spirit”
  • Intentionally inviting yourself into the rhythm of what God is doing.
    • Youth group, 8 kids / 15 kids, youth Pastor was going to give up. “God, I can’t do this”
    • One kid got saved. Then His friend, and his friend, and it grew to a few hundred.
  • We don’t know, but we “wait” (vs. 4) and be ready!

#3. Witness Read vs. 8

  1.  In your neighborhood (Local church & city)
  2.  In your region (Sending Church planters)
  3.  In your world (World missions)

Read vs. 9-11

  • Jesus has taken His place at the right hand of God and now he sends us… with help!
  • It’s time to be prepared for what God is going to do through us. We are his plan to save, redeem, and reconcile the world.
  • How do we prepare?

      What Rhythms have we heard?

  • Be about the WORD as we
  • Continue Kingdom Change as a
  • Spirit Filled Witness.

Benediction- May we walk in the Rhythms of the Church
