Supremacy

John 3:31-36, “It’s all about Jesus”

  • Gospel of John
    • these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. John 20:31
      • What true “believing” is and who Jesus truly is.
  • Summary and Context.
    • Apostle John giving a summary of what he is getting at so far in his Gospel.
      • Note: quotations end (“” are not in greek)
    • Equally important to note that our text is exclusively indicative.
      • Indicative & Imperative. No “therefore”
    • Fallen Condition Focus- Is there a Fallen condition is in our text that is focused on?
    • What do learn about God in our text?
      • (vs. 33) God is true (vs. 34), Sent Jesus, communicates God’s message, gives the Spirit with out measure, loves Jesus, and gives him all things
    • What do learn about man in our text?
      • Of and belongs to the earth, speaks earthly, mostly rejects Jesus’ message but those who do set their seal (Stamped authority) that God is true, Some believe Jesus and see life some disobey Jesus do to see life because the wrath of God remains with him.
    • What do learn about Jesus in our text?
      • Jesus is from heaven (above), Jesus is above all (2x), bears witness to what he observes, Jesus is sent by God, speaks the words of God, Jesus has ALL things in his hands, and Jesus gives eternal life
  • Knowing all that, what do you think the main point of the text is?
    • It’s all about Jesus
      • Remember, he is reminding us of the point.
      • God’s way, by way of reminder
        • Creation, fall, redemption, restoration,
        • Promise- He will be our God, we will be his people, and he will dwell with us
  • ALL ABOUT JESUS

#1. All

  • Above all, all things
    • Supremacy: the state or condition of bring superior to all others in authority, power and status. Read John 1:1-5
  • He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:15–17Alpha & Omega, Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess
    • True Life is all about Jesus!

#2. About

  • We are all about what Jesus is all about.
    • Read vs. 36, “Obey”- Some versions say “does not believe”.
    • Greek- Apeitheo: Unwillingness or refusal to comply with the demands of some authority.
      • What true unbelief is an unwillingness or refusal to comply with the demands of the authority of Jesus. Therefore, TRUE belief is to comply with the demands of the supremacy of Jesus!
      • The assumption is if you believe you will obey. True faith is being about what Jesus is about.
  • “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:15–17
    • Indicative
  • Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked. 1 John 2:4–6
    • Indicative
  • Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 1 John 5:1–4
    • Indicative
      • Do you believe this truth?
  • #3. It’s all about Jesus
    • Gospel, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness”
      • lead into communion
